Wi-Fi: Addressing the Village's Internet Desert

For most Americans, having access to the Internet is a given – much like running water or electricity. An estimated 24 million people in the United States, though, live in “digital deserts,” depriving them of educational and economic opportunities. Research shows that communities lacking broadband may have difficulty attracting businesses, and puts their residents at risk of negative health outcomes.

We believe providing broadband access through a Village Wi-Fi system is an infrastructure need every bit as important as paving streets and providing law enforcement. The economic profile of the Village, though, is a factor in how we need to do it. Our median income is $24,396, compared with the Ohio median of $56,602. In Lincoln Heights, 51% of households earn less than $25,000 annually; 24% earn between $25,000 and $50,000. That means the internet access must be offered at low- or no-cost.

Through an RFP process, PowerNet was selected as the vendor to provide a Wi-Fi system to the Village. The project team also includes TechSoft systems (the tech consultant to the Village), Siklu (equipment to create redundant network and future proofing) and GoZone WiFi (for best-in-class user experience and analytics).

This project will be completed over time in three phases. Phase One is fully funded and implementation has begun.

A reliable, affordable Wi-Fi system will have two immediate positive impacts. Our Village residents will reap the educational and social benefits of internet connectivity and begin developing the digital skills increasingly demanded by employers. And the Village will have a competitive advantage in attracting and retaining residents, jobs and businesses.
